Three Ways to Maximize Learning with Screen Time

maximize learning with screen time

Let’s face it. Kids today log more screen time in their first few years of life than some adults have the entire time they have been alive. Technology is a huge part of the lives of children. And because of that, adjustments in thinking often have to be made. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics has revamped
their recommendation on the amount of time children should have in front of screens.

But these recommendations, these adjustments, still require parental support and guidance. How can this screen time be maximized to support learning while students remain engaged?

First, encourage the use of educational apps. These apps are specifically designed by educators and others who know the unique nature and needs of students. Educational apps engage children with creative games and characters, incorporate basic learning skills, and consistently encourage learning in exciting ways.

Second, always monitor that usage. Even though the recommendations have been updated to acknowledge the heavy role technology plays in the lives of children, parental guidance is still a necessity. Know what apps your children regularly use. Place pass code restrictions on the devices so an app cannot be loaded without your approval. This allows you to monitor the type of apps your children a playing with as well as purchases being made.

And finally, talk with your children regularly. Education is critically important to the success of your child’s future, but they take their clues from you. When you stay engaged with your student, by consistently discussing what they are doing with their device, and new things they have learned, you are not only supporting their learning, you are letting them know you think what is going on with them is important to. This acknowledgement only encourages their learning and encourages more.
